Job Description


The Senior Mechanical Engineer (Robotics) will work closely with the Mechanical Team Lead and other team members to build and design the HELIX robotic platforms and payloads. To do this, the Mechanical Engineer needs to be a motivated, enthusiastic team member with a commitment to quality, and success as a team. The ideal candidate is an effective team worker, who listens well, respects diversity of opinions and has an open, clear and succinct communication style. The candidate will be able to identify and assess technology development opportunities, initiate and manage multiple ongoing product development projects, and recognize and define problems by collecting data to draw relevant and valid conclusions.


The Mechanical Engineer will focus on the development of new robotic platforms and payloads. This includes contributing to the design of all mechanical aspects: design calculations and design of drive mechanisms, structures, payloads, power transmission components, etc. The Mechanical Engineer will produce high quality drawings for parts and assemblies. Once the parts are built, the Mechanical Engineer will help in the assembly and testing of the new mechanical systems. The candidate should be excited to push robots to their limits in the field.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Design of the mechanical systems for the HELIX robotic platform with consideration on how all robotic systems integrate, industrial applications, and an understanding of how designs get manufactured with considerations for time, cost and quality
  • Prototype and build the HELIX robotic systems and platform
  • Conduct research to determine the parameters and specifications for design
  • Effectively research and source components
  • Produce high quality drawings for parts and assemblies
  • Review drawings and assemblies, perform calculations, FEA and other analyses as required
  • Troubleshoot defects in design, research and propose suitable solutions
  • Create technical documentation for reference and reporting
  • Ensure BOM are complete and contains all necessary information for assembly
  • Assist in project planning and budgeting
  • Participate in field testing as required
  • Communicate and collaborate with other engineers efficiently
  • Actively participate in meetings, make substantial contribution to design reviews, provide comment and suggestions on mechanical engineering designs 


  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent 
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in designing industrial equipment
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in product development
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a relevant industry 
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in mechatronic design
  • Minimum of 3 years experience using Solidworks
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment

Bonus Qualification

  • Experience in robotic systems design, testing, and prototyping
  • Experience with mechatronics in marine or industrial environments
  • Experience in interfacing with sensors and other hardware
  • Experience with electric and hydraulic driven motors
  • Experience with chain driven equipment
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles
  • Experience with geotechnical site investigation equipment
  • Experience building or maintaining farm equipment
  • APEGA membership is an asset
  • Second languages are always an asset
